Grandma's Sugar Cookies

(the famous Christmas cookie recipe)

These cookies were always ready for Janine, Wayne, and Lana when they got to Grandma Morris's house. Unfrosted, the cookies were sprinkled with sugar and topped with exactly three raisins each. Later, they became our favorite heavily frosted Christmas cookies, lovingly decorated with six different colors of frosting. Make a double batch for Christmas eating.

INGREDIENTS

1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 c. sour cream
2 eggs, beaten
1 t. vanilla
5 c. flour
1 t. baking soda
2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla to sour cream. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with liquid. Chill for a few hours.

Roll 1/4 inch thick on cloth-covered board or lightly floured surface. Cut with round cutter or Christmas shapes. Mix uncut dough in with fresh dough, and try not to add too much more flour in as you cut the cookies (they get tough when they are overworked).

Bake at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes.
